The ‘Re-ignite the Fire’ series focuses on a foray into BDSM. The first book, New Beginnings, is more of a beginners adventure into the world of domination and submission, and the suspense, curiosity and exploration of this completely new, and sometimes shocking, world. I was drawn to the genre after some of my own experiences as a slightly younger woman, as well as liking a bit of a thrill myself!
Can you describe the story in one or two sentences for our readers?
A couple who are looking to get some of the youthful passion back into their marriage find themselves caught up in a bizarre adventure culminating in an exploration of their inner desires and limits, sort of a ‘looking for one thing but finding something better’ scenario.
Tell us the story behind the story. What influenced you to write it and how long did it take you?
I was always lonely growing up in the countryside. I was so far from civilisation so when I moved to the city I just wanted to try everything I felt I’d been missing out on. After being introduced to the BDSM scene by a male friend I remember how out of my depth and scared I was, but so caught up in it I couldn’t shake the feelings of nervous excitement. This is the feeling I hope to capture in my books, especially the first two, ‘New Beginnings’ and ‘A Perfect Gift’.
There’s really four main characters (soon to be five!). There’s Ashleigh, the housewife who feels neglected by her husband despite knowing he loves her. She represents the feelings of trepidation at what’s happening around her. Then there’s Cal, her husband, who is struggling with being a working man and a family man. His desire to see Ashleigh happy but also to protect her represents the conflict between head and heart, sensibility and lust. Then we have Bella, the submissive. I REALLY enjoy her as a character, exploring the mystery surrounding her, particularly in the third book, ‘Gifts Entwined’. She represents the focal point for Ashleigh and Cal, the answer to the question, “Is it ok to take pleasure from this?” And finally we have Matthew, who throughout the start of the series is the guiding light to these new experiences. I enjoyed developing his character in ‘Gifts Entwined’, hopefully giving the readers a real insight into who the man is behind the facade.
Is there a part of you in any of the characters?
As clichéd as it sounds, I like to think there is a little bit of all of them in me, and anyone else remotely interested in domination, submission and bondage. The curiosity, excitement, internal conflict and pure lust is something everyone should experience.
What is the message in your books that you want your readers to grasp?
I think the most important message is to understand that it’s ok to explore the things that spark those feelings of lust and excitement deep down and that everyone has their own unique sexual personality they should embrace. ‘New Beginnings’ explores the excitement and bewilderment of felling in over your head but too curious to turn back. ‘A Perfect Gift’ looks at the importance of exploring your desires and understanding that sexual preferences are a very personal and unique adventure. ‘Gifts Entwined’ really is more of an exploration into the difficulties of living and loving in a sub/dom relationship, especially given what society expects relationships to be like. I remember thinking “Why am I this way? Am I not normal?” during my early experiences and I wanted to look at that from an outside perspective.
Well I always pictured Bella as quite Diva Von Teese-esque. Matthew I would LOVE someone with the demeanour of Wentworth Miller but the looks of Ian Somerehalder. Ashleigh would be great played by Hayden Panettiere and Cal would have to be Channing Tatum, yum!
Are there other writers that inspire your own work?
Oh there are SO many amazing authors out there at the moment, but I particularly love the books of Julie Kenner and Kendall Ryan at the moment.
What is your current writing project and when will it be released?
I’m working on the as yet untitled book four in the ‘Reignite’ series and taking a slightly more ‘individual’s adventure’ route. I’m looking a lot more into the life of a submissive rather than just the sex. I hope to have it released within the next five months.
What is the best thing about your writer’s life?
That feeling when you sit down after a bit of a difficult period creatively and the words just start to flow. When you get that exact image of the scene unfurling in your head and it just transfers to the page perfectly, down to every last detail. What a feeling!
When did you decide to become a writer?
It’s really something I’ve always loved to do in my spare time and in the past year have really started putting more time and effort into developing the ‘Reignite’ world and its characters.
How do you find the time to write?
I used to travel a lot around the country and the train journeys gave me so much regimented time to write. Now I just fill my weekends with whatever aspect I fancy, be it planning the long-running themes in the series, or the next book, or just getting a few more pages down I’m really happy with over a glass of wine.
How can readers find you online?
My Facebook page is a great way to keep up on book offers, updates on the latest book’s progress and to just chat about characters if anyone has any questions. I love to hear from fans who have views on characters and what they would like to see in future books in the series. The page can be found at https://www.facebook.com/amiesaskatchewan
